The origins of the Raffaellesco as a Deruta pottery design are uncertain. Our favorite theory is that the craftsman who created this design wanted to pay tribute to the seagoing merchants who brought the "maiolica" from the East to Italy, thus laying the groundwork for a most beloved Italian craft. Before boarding their ships, the merchants used to invoke the favors of the benevolent dragon, who granted them good luck and fair winds.
