Raffaellesco Serving Bowl
Descriptions & details
The origins of the Raffaellesco as a Deruta pottery design are uncertain. Our favorite theory is that the craftsman who created this design wanted to pay tribute to the seagoing merchants who brought the "maiolica" from the East to Italy, thus laying the groundwork for a most beloved Italian craft.
Before boarding their ships, the merchants used to invoke the favors of the benevolent dragon, who granted them good luck and fair winds.

The artist
Founded in 1960, FIMA is a family-run business in Deruta. Its excellent, well-deserved reputation is mainly due to its traditional Deruta dinnerware, such as Raffaellesco, Ricco Deruta, and Arabesco. Indeed, they are among the finest you can find in Deruta, thanks to their intricate, carefully hand-painted details and loyal adherence to the traditional colors and techniques. However, FIMA has created many original designs that have become classics in their own right.
Deruta is a small town in Umbria, in the heart of Italy. It has been one of the most vital centers for the production of Italian ceramics since the Renaissance (15th century). Today, Deruta is highly regarded worldwide for the fine quality and beauty of its pottery.
