Descriptions & details
The name Grottesche refers to the grottoes in which these decorations were found c. 1500 during the excavation of Roman houses. Raphael was enthralled by the intricacy and beauty of these designs and incorporated them into his work.

The artist
L'Antica Deruta is a family-owned business founded by Alviero Moretti in the fifties. He was an innovator, determined to make pottery that, while very much inspired by traditional designs, would be more suitable to modern lifestyle and artistic sensibility. While working on his own collections, Alviero collaborated with prominent Italian painters and sculptors, effectively promoting ceramics as a contemporary art medium.
L'Antica Deruta is now run by Alviero Moretti's children, with passion and dedication.
Deruta is a small town in Umbria, in the heart of Italy. It has been one of the most vital centers for the production of Italian ceramics since the Renaissance (15th century). Today, Deruta is highly regarded worldwide for the fine quality and beauty of its pottery.
