The artist
La Bottega delle Stelle is a ceramic studio directed by the artist Riccardo Biavati and run by his partner Antonella Manfredini. Biavati's ceramics are made of dreams, fired into imaginary worlds and owned by pure-hearted collectors. His windswept trees and inhabited bowls - have you seen Pinocchio? - have the fabric and the timeless quality of fairy tales. His playful owl-shaped whistles are the contemporary heroes of a long-running tradition of clay whisperers, their sounds adding to the magic of his art.
La Bottega delle Stelle is located in the center of Ferrara. The City of the Renaissance became an intellectual and artistic center in the 15th and 16th centuries. It attracted the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance, thanks to its enlightened rulers, the House of Este. They encouraged the development of a local ceramic tradition, known as engraved or sgraffito pottery. The initial production was primarily functional, with vessels crafted to meet the need of courtly life. It then evolved into more elaborate, ornamental forms, sumptuously decorated.
